ch-ch-ch-changes

Hi friends, transgressors, first-time readers & droids! Hello, to you too, if you don’t fall in one of the mentioned categories.

In December 2015, before I went on a blog-free January journey, I talked about some changes that were coming to this blog in terms of content & looks and all that fun stuff. Well, because things cost more money than I have, and because I’ve never managed to fit neatly into the boxes of beauty blogger or lifestyle blogger or book blogger or – you see where this is going? – I just did some of the things, and today I get to share them with you!

First off, we are now okayshalom.comThis is the most exciting part for me. I bought my domain, and I’m super happy about the way it rhymes and that it matches my header title. I got it on a day when the exchange rate was cooperating, so I feel as lucky as the Britney Spears song.

Next off, I was reminded how #blessed I am to know the amazingly talented people that I do. My lovely friend Jéad sacrificed a crap early morning to make a miracle out of my crazily unphotogenic self & conduct one hell of a shoot in the inner city of Johannesburg. Jéad is phenomenally kind, brilliant, selfless and talented. I am better for knowing her. You can have a look at her portfolio here and contact her for bookings in South Africa at jeadstehr@gmail.com. 10/10 would recommend. Thank you, Jead!

Finally, I did one of my first paid-for pieces of writing! Not on here, but for someone who needed a ghostwriter. I was terribly excited and am positively thrilled to do more. Thanks to everyone who believed in my writing enough to still read the often rubbish I put on this corner of the internet.

I’m finally making use of the scheduling tool, so I have three posts coming your way this week! Prepare yourself for the influx, as well as the possible theme & image changes on the site.

Welcome to okayshalom.com!

A Christmas Miracle | Blogmas Day 22?

featured image from boldcupofcoffee.com

I’ve been out of action for a while, but I take zero responsibility for it. Zeus threw a hissy fit of epic proportions, resulting in an electric storm that shocked our home PC, several power stations, and a major reservoir. Not your average second sentence.

We’ve been without power for a while, and our friendly neighbouring suburbs (jk i have no clue if they are friendly) have been without water. It’s been a fun lead up to Christmas!

It really hasn’t.

The Christmas tree is, according to my brother, “loaded”, and everyone’s gifts are -haha- present. [insert picture I 100% did take because I did not lose my camera AGAIN]

I received an email from one of my prospective unis today, and pretended to work on the scholarship essays that I really need to be working on. I feel like these posts have had a similar theme?

What’s in store for me is a massive anxiety attack concerning the fact that THE FUTURE is in a little over a week. When 2015 is over, my schooling career will officially be as well? I don’t know, it’s just a strange set of circumstances for me to come to terms with. I also don’t yet have a planner for next year, and I am that planner person. UGH.

In any case, I have a friendioni coming over tomorrow (i don’t know what friendioni means) and I plan to get my Love Actually fix before the festive period is up. I need a tea in a Christmas mug ASAP,because Lord knows my festivity is wearing thin.

Please note: SUPER festive. (also, that poor tiny dog!)

Love and light,

Blogmas, Vlogmas & December In Between | Update

Aloha! I have updates and news that are 70% irrelevant to mast things concerning most people. Little things that are happening (for real this time) but before I start, I should inform you: I’m in South Africa. Snow at Christmastime is NOT a thing. Okay. Now, it begins!

  1. Blogmas & Vlogmas

Starting on December 1st, I’m going to be doing a blog-a-day until Christmas and sometimes, a little vlog too over here on my YouTube channel – you can subscribe to get first dibs! I think I low-key know that I’m only committing to Vlogmas so I have a reason to get up and shower every day. Or something. Stay tuned for my lonely December misadventures while all my friends are (a) overseas, (b) partying it up by the sea, or (c) both. Everyone is welcome to join! I think I’ll be using WeBlogWeVlog‘s Vlogmas calendar from last year – just scroll back to December 2014. Here it is too, for your added convenience:

2. Ta, High School

I got through exams! Somehow I managed, and I don’t know how I’m going to stay sane until results day in January. In any case, a school uniform will never mandatorily adorn my body again. Bless.

3. The Series Quest

I’ve got a lot to do in terms of time wasting. For example, I’d love to watch Jessica Jones BUT I’m lucky enough to live South of the equator where Netflix doesn’t exist. Except maybe in Australia? I’m not sure. In any case, I need new series to watch, old series to finish (I see you, Game of Thrones) and something, anything, to obsess over.

That’s pretty much what December looks like for me – I hope you stick around! What does your December look like?

(That was the cheesiest, most cliche blogger ending I have ever typed out. Yeesh.)

Love and light,
Shalom

Reasons to love Lorde & Disclosure’s MAGNETS video

I started this post two days ago. Seriously.

Okay, so that sounded more like a Buzzfeed title than I intended.

Lorde & Disclosure teamed up earlier this year to create the “dark electric blues and greens” track that “moves like liquid”. The product of the combination was MAGNETS. The track is available for download on iTunes here.

Now, let’s talk about this video.

WATCH IT. IF YOU’RE PLANNING ON READING THE REST OF THIS WITHOUT WATCHING, IT YOU’RE MAKING A MISTAKE. WATCH IT.

This video is just !!! It gives me life. The narrative changes from “oh, classy Lorde” to “affair?” to “omg hit girl?” It’s amazing. Here’s what Lorde had to say about it:

The reason I love Lorde is because she’s so unapolagetically herself. Ella is 18, and takes no shit. It’s brilliant, and it’s what I want to be at 18. Her tumblr has kept me alive since 2012 and everyone should follow her if you’re in need of something to scroll through for hours and reconsider the state of everything. You should. Seriously. Right here.

That’s all I have to say about MAGNETS. It’s currently my favourite song. I adore the video. Ella Yelich-O’Connor is my hero.

Scoot on ~ stuff I don’t know what to title

My name is Scoot – wait…wait, I’ve done this before.

Anyway, hi everybody! I know, I know, I said new posts every day but woah :O School just got a lot more hectic and I don’t even know how. It’s like someone’s standing behind the school, and has got this huge hectic-o-meter, and they just turned it up to something crazy like 11 when the scale only goes up to 5.

Anyway, I’ve been out and about going on camps, being pranked involving hyenas, eating bag after bag of chips, becoming lacto-vegetarian  😀 PROUD 😀 and also staying alive, which is relatively important at this point. 🙂

I guess with all my days away I’ve had a chance to think about something absolutely mind boggling…but I changed my mind. I guess what my dear shortest friend said to me today means much more: “Isn’t it scary how most of your life is based on things you do as a teenager?”

That got me good. I mean, you’re a crazy sixteen year old who wants to do nothing but have a beautiful face and a boyfriend/girlfriend and be accepted and taste alcohol…and that’s your future, bro. Why on earth would the universe ever let some crazy hormonal-ass teenager make life decisions? Like, is this some sort of a sick joke? It’s craziness, I wont lie. And today, I don’t have a list for you on how to make the best decisions when you’re a teenager, or how to live a fuul life, or how to be absolutely fantastic and amazing…but I do know that we can do anything.

We, as in you and I. I can. You can. YOU CAN! I probably don’t know who you are, or what you’re going through, or why, or if your favourite goldfish got stolen, or if your pasta sauce won’t thicken, or if you’re feeling suicidal and want to die more than anything, I don’t know. I do know that I’ve been through a hell of a lot. And I’m here. There are so so so many times when I think about all the times I tried to picture how better the world would be without me, but I’m here. I’m here, and I’m a blogger, and I’m alive. I’m alive.

I don’t know if that’s a big deal for you guys, but it is for me. Really, it is. It’s a big deal to be able to look someone dead in the face and say, “You are a lovely person and I would love to keep talking to you”. It’s a big deal for me. I think that we all have time to do that, to make someone better–we just need to find it.

So that’s all I have on my mind for today, and also that I think you’re beautiful. Everyday, I think you are beautiful. And whoever has the pleasure of ever speaking to you is a better person because they did.

My interview for Junior City Council is tomorrow, and I hope you all have fingers crossed for me 🙂

Gun to my head honest, I love you all. I mean, thank you. For being.

All my love all the time

-Scoot xx
