monthly me | august 2016

Here’s me, adopting a feature from one of my favourite bloggers & people on the internet: Michelle from Piece of Caustic. It’s a monthly round-up that she’s been doing for as long as I’ve been following her, and I figured it’d be nice to be able to look back at a month after I had immortalised it on the internet. Here we go!

august

August was deadlines and skipping class and chronic headaches and meeting people. I spent most of the academic term in bed, and averaged four hours of sleep because everything was due on August 26th. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out who my friends are and why, and rued the day I decided that spending all of my money in a solid two hours was a good idea.

general life updates

  • I got two more clients through a different tutoring company (!) after I was fired from my long term gig because the student told her mom that I didn’t explain well even though I always asked her if she understood, or if I needed to explain further.
  • I hit my savings goal for my trip to Portugal for the end of the year!
  • Renewed my passport alone, all adult-like and everything
  • Finished my first non-school theatre production AND signed a program for someone

obsessions

  • printing song lyrics in courier sans
  • knee socks, patterned stockings, and short skirts
  • Dr Ze’toile Imma, my African-American poetry guest lecturer (I ADORE HER)
  • venti mocha frappucinos from Starbucks

music

OH GOODNESS I GOT SO MANY ALBUMS IN AUGUST.

boy-mutual-friendsMutual Friends by BOY is such a gem. Every song  made sense and made my heart ache a little bit and I felt scared and safe and warm all at once. I listened to it from start to finish
over and over again.

Favourite tracks include but are not limited to: This is The Beginning, July, Boris, and Little Numbers. The acoustic version of Skin is also phenomenal.

When my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold dark earth
And no grave can hold my body down, I’ll crawl home to her

I’M SO BUSY

snippets of internal monologue

  • SHaLOm it is not your fault if they miss the tut because they are high! It isn’t your..it’s not…maybe you should go and get them & look after them anyway.
  • If this boy keeps talking I’m going to put my knees through my eye sockets.
  • If I do get arrested by the CIA, does that mean I get an extention on my law assignment?
  • Is it an incidental finding that I lose followers whenever I post selfies?
  • BLOCK THIS BOY ON ALL PLATFORMS HE IS SCARY BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK BL

I’m happy that September is upon us. I’m almost finished with my first year of university whaaaaat! I’m going to go drink some water and make my bed. Stay well.

ch-ch-ch-changes

Hi friends, transgressors, first-time readers & droids! Hello, to you too, if you don’t fall in one of the mentioned categories.

In December 2015, before I went on a blog-free January journey, I talked about some changes that were coming to this blog in terms of content & looks and all that fun stuff. Well, because things cost more money than I have, and because I’ve never managed to fit neatly into the boxes of beauty blogger or lifestyle blogger or book blogger or – you see where this is going? – I just did some of the things, and today I get to share them with you!

First off, we are now okayshalom.comThis is the most exciting part for me. I bought my domain, and I’m super happy about the way it rhymes and that it matches my header title. I got it on a day when the exchange rate was cooperating, so I feel as lucky as the Britney Spears song.

Next off, I was reminded how #blessed I am to know the amazingly talented people that I do. My lovely friend Jéad sacrificed a crap early morning to make a miracle out of my crazily unphotogenic self & conduct one hell of a shoot in the inner city of Johannesburg. Jéad is phenomenally kind, brilliant, selfless and talented. I am better for knowing her. You can have a look at her portfolio here and contact her for bookings in South Africa at jeadstehr@gmail.com. 10/10 would recommend. Thank you, Jead!

Finally, I did one of my first paid-for pieces of writing! Not on here, but for someone who needed a ghostwriter. I was terribly excited and am positively thrilled to do more. Thanks to everyone who believed in my writing enough to still read the often rubbish I put on this corner of the internet.

I’m finally making use of the scheduling tool, so I have three posts coming your way this week! Prepare yourself for the influx, as well as the possible theme & image changes on the site.

Welcome to okayshalom.com!

love & light

this is what days off look like

I’m feeling very lowercase today. I’m probably going to change my theme. Again.

I’m currently writing my matric final exams (similar grading system as the IB, if that helps?) and tomorrow is one of my demons: maths. Mathematics. Why is it even a thing? As if a day could be more anxiety ridden. (Ask me again the day before maths paper 2, physics, chemistry, results day..) I feel strange, and I did when I woke up this morning, so this post is just snippets from my day of never-ending stress, in short sentences. That’s all.

After tomorrow’s exam, I will have a massive blister on this finger.

You’re growing, but you’re raising yourself.

I’m quite overwhelmed.

If you need to get over yourself, you’ll know. Get over yourself.

Scoot on ~ how a good day can turn you into a teenage monster

This post was written on Monday, the 6th of January 2014, and published today. Know why? Because this is the PROCRAASTINAAAATIOOON STAAAATIOOON!

***

Why hello there! You see, I was wondering how you manange to go about the way you do, seeing that they youness of you fills all the pace you walk into, and it’s awesmome.

Today, I  crawled out ou bed at around 8.30am – intreresting, seeing as this girl did not sleep at all. And then I thought that the day would continue to be a regular counterproductive day – I mean, it’s vacation. What the hell else are you meant to do?

Well, instead of staying in bed and watching TouTubers all day,  I was out of bed before 3pm. I’m actually going to type that again, because that is a BIG deal for me. BEFORE 3pm! Now before you get all hopeful for me, let me let you down as I do 🙂 I was only out of bed because I was going to go to the optometrist with my little sister.  Now, if I wanted to have an unproductive day,  that totally ruined it for me.  What else made me all chirpy was the good music of The Beatles ‘1’ album, Phoenix, The Naked and Famous, and The All American Rejects.

The day started off at Cresta Shopping Centre, with mom going to American Express, and then the bank. Now, as you may or may not know, there’s not much for a fiteen year old and a thirteen year old to do in a bank. So, we took our seats on rather cushiony chairs, and this happened:

Immanuela: *takes water* Hey, can I have some of your water?
Me: You can’t just take things without asking! Hey, Chester, you stole my water!
Immanuela: I didn’t say anything when you stole my life.
Me: What?

Me: *pokes Immanuela’s nose*
Immanuela: What the hell?
Me: I’m really sorry, I just had to poke your nose!
Immanuela: Oh. Okay.
*several minutes later*
Immanuela: *pokes me viciously in stomach*
Me: Ah good payback.
Immanuela: No, I just wanted to see if I could.
Me: Okay…

Me: *chokes on water and quacks*
Immanuela: Ah, don’t die here.
Me: I quacked.
Immanuela: *bursts out laughing*
Me: What?
Immanuela: I just registered what that sounded like!
Me: Well, when I make this face I look like a pterodactyl. *makes face*
Immanuela: *laughs hysterically*
Me: *laughs hysterically*
Man behind desk: *looks at us concernedly*

So on the way up to the upper level of the store,  I danced in an elevator and walked out like nothing happened. We then went to game and I, Shalom Obisie-Orlu, bought a phone with my own cash. Yeah, it was R900-00 (so $90 American) and I had to pay for it without parental help – it’s awesome and I love it.

Anyway, that happened, and so we went to the optometrist where the lovely Ma Agnes helped us with admin. So my sister got her check up done, and I got the marvellous news that my trial contact lenses had arrived! My sister and eye (OH MY GOODNESS I MADE A FUNNY) got our eyes checked by Idette – who is such a fantastically beautiful person it astonishes me- and I’m off to see her again on Wednesday.

This is Agnes :D

This is Agnes 😀

This is Idette :D

This is Idette 😀

So I came home, feeling all chilled out, the teenage monster overtook me, and I ended up taking a typical teenage girl picture. This is the result of my “I’m a teenage girl exploring the world” pose. Have a stellar day-day!

Look at me. Holding my dress. Teenage girl status: accomplished.

Looking back and pressing forward. ♥

Well, how was your 2013? Happy New Year!!

Yes, yes: “Oh my word Scoot, you’re so cliché, making this new years post, my gosh it’s so cheesy”

WELL ACTUALLY I DON’T CARE

Truth be told, I am a thorough cheese indulger and those people do cheesy things. Well, lucky for you, I didn’t make a flipagram. I did however, make a year in review gallery 😀 So enjoy!
