YEAH, I KNOW. [Alternatively: Feb Faves & a Monthly Roundup]

So, my good friend Engie made a post about the things that were making her mad and stressing her out, and a lot of them revolved around college, being a blogger in college…you get where I’m going with this? I’ve been away for two odd weeks. I make these posts all the time (see…all my past posts for reference) but this time, I have actual things to say. Yay for planned rambles!

1. RE: UNIVERSITY.

This thing just does not let up. I’m a law student and I’m taking courses in philosophy, media studies and english as well. I had no idea just how far behind one could fall in three weeks. It’s safe to say that I’ve found out. Blogging has become la absolute SAFEHAVEN. I think I’m going to force myself to incorporate it into my failure of a schedule – like mandatory me-time? (I hate the phrase me-time. Ugh.)Some advice to all the hatchlings who will soon be embarking on the Great College Adventure TM: Come in armed. It’ll eat you alive if you don’t. Always have an umbrella, a charger, cash, and painkillers. Also a pen.

2. Favourites!

I haven’t done much in the way of the fun things, but I have, as usual, made my home in the Internet. Here are some things (most Internet, some not.) that I loved this month:

Alt-Indie Music Videos

Troye Sivan, Halsey and THE 1975 all released music videos for such AMAZING tunes off of their respective latest albums. Troye’s video for YOUTH blew me away for several reasons: (1) SO MUCH PURPLE PASTEL INDIE TUMBLR TEEN. (2) HAPPY FUNCTIONAL PARTY TEENAGERS. (actually, Troye is 20 (21 in June!) but he still counts. For reasons. Halsey’s video for Colors (the South African in me is mega cringing at that spelling) is just…let me tell you, (#nospoilers), it’s not what you expect. The music video for THE 1975’s The Sound is really the BEST THING I  SAW THE ENTIRE MONTH. It’s a massive ‘up yours’ to all of the critics who “only heard chocolate once and hated it”. Watch it. WATCH THEM ALL.

Blogger: Maxine Zhao

Alright, so I feel super honoured to say that Max once told me that I served as inspiration for her starting her blog. And man, do you need to see it. Maxine is what I’d call an up-and-coming fashion and lifestyle blogger with INSANE talent regarding taking timed tripod self shots. She’s also an absolute doll with a tiny little car named Kevin. Did you need any further justification? Check her out here.

Beauty

I’m not even going to pretend to know a lot about beauty. At all. Because I don’t. But I’ve been using mostly Nivea products as of late, just because they happen to work the best with my skin. For now. Stress breakouts are a real thing  and a good skincare regime is legitimately another university must have. Here are some of the things that I’ve been putting on my largest organ! (Skin. I’m talking about my skin.)

I have combination to oily skin, and this shine control face wash from Nivea is just YES. It’s super soothing on the skin, first and foremost, and it also works really well? It feels a lot like a continuous sea breeze while you’re washing your face. (10 points if you can think of a worse sounding line.) In the way of makeup, I don’t wear much because I can’t afford much (lol) but I DO love the LA Girl Perfecting Liquid Makeup foundation in Mahogany. I adore this foundation. It feels really light on the skin, and doesn’t wear off at all – I generally don’t need to reapply it during the day. I should really invest in a BB cream for the days that I don’t feel up to the industrial task of putting on a bit of paint. Hmm. Money.

Winning!

This month, writer and illustrator Dallas Clayton announced a competition on Instagram. He made six journals, and asked for cities from every continent to send them to. He’s still looking for some participants from Antarctica. Long story short, he chose Johannesburg! It’s all very exciting. I’m excited.

3. February.

February has been orange. It’s been the sheer intensity of my media studies course pack readings, the only pen I could find for two weeks, my flats that the 10 minute walk between buildings on campus ruined, and the 36 C days. I have learned how to hold my breath for as long as possible when being utterly submerged by the ocean that is “adulthood”. I’m not really an adult. Not even legally – I’m still 17. It does, however, seem that I am in the bracket where ‘act like an adult’ is applicable. I’m acting, alright.

For the first time this month, I was paid an allowance (!) which may not seem like much, but you need to realise that I’d never recieved an allowance before. Oh, Shalom, how did you go out to concerts and movies and the things you loved with your mostly make-believe friends through out high school? I didn’t. It was really cool – until I ran out of money. And had no way to get home from school because I couldn’t pay for public transport. Or food on campus. I’ve learned a lot since then. (Bye, morning cappuccinos.)

I’m really stressed out about what March will bring. March sees my FAFSA deadline (thank you uncooperative parent for STILL not having provided me with your tax information 🙂 ), my first official written tests, learning how to write an abstract & a research paper, more poetry analysis than I thought possible, and probably more tears than I am hydrated for. It’s surreal to think that we’re already almost in the third month of 2016, but I’m glad we’re all here.

This was lovely to write and compile and all the rest. Thank you all for sticking around! I think you are all very kind. I also think I want to make videos? Because I keep wanting to say things – in my actual voice, that people can hear – but then I remember that I’m typing. Hm. A thing to consider.

Love and light,
shalom

my youth is yours

what if we say goodbye to safe and sound?

It’s always a whirlwind. It’s a crazy amount of everything you’ve always wanted to feel and everything you’ve been told only “stupid teenagers” do. It’s breathing when another person does and trying to recreate the moment that the two of you stood with baited breath, words hitched on either of your tongues, thoughts running amok in both of your heads.

when the stars start exploding, we’ll be fireproof

It’s “we’ll weather this”, it’s “long distance will work because we’re different”, it’s “I can’t tell my parents about us” and “I want to do this”. It’s every fear every adult has thrown at you, and anything that can and will happen to the 21st century relationship – it’s what you won’t allow to happen to you.

cross your fingers; here we go

It’s every single BuzzFeed article about how to make things work, every single #relateable post from Tumblr that was tweeted about that you saw on Facebook. Every day is a risk, love is risk, art is risk – and you have and always will be determined to create a masterpiece.

we’ve no time for getting old, mortal body; timeless souls

It’s making a decision to never stop doing the little things, a promise to yourself that you’ll never end up like your best friend’s mom, crying over a broken marriage and a broken man. It’s an acknowledgement to yourself that despite all of your only eighteen years here, you know what’s good for you. That you know what you want, what you need; and that what you have has got to be the best of both.

a truth so loud you can’t ignore

It’s the moment you realise that this is not forever, but it is all you have. That you’re more than warnings and false starts, that “you are what you love and not who loves you”. It’s the moment that you surrender to yourself – your young, idealistic, opportunistic self. It’s all you. It’s all youth.

a truth so loud you can’t ignore
my youth, my youth, my youth
my youth is yours

happy tunesday! this piece of writing was based on troye sivan’s “youth”, for which the lyric video was released yesterday. blue neighbourhood is available for preorder here, and several tracks become available upon preorder, including “youth” and “talk me down“. i’m a big, big fangirl. sue me.

September Favourites

Greetings! It has indeed been too long of a while. Things have changed around here – well, one thing has changed here – my theme! I was going for the modern-but-also-annoyed-but-also-really-happy-with-this look. Did I succeed? Let me know!

Now, I’ve never done a favourites post, but I was trailing through the danger that is my internet history, and I found some things that I think people would be better off knowing about. Yes. Dangling preposition. I see it. I’m ignoring it.

1. Cœur de Pirate

Cœur de Pirate (literally meaning Pirate’s Heart) is Béatrice Martin and her French indie-pop  melodies. Check her out if you’re a fan of  Local Natives , The Head and The Heart, and Of Monsters and Men. The chances are that you’ll love Cœur de Pirate regardless. Her latest single, Carry On, is available in both French and English, and the newest album, Roses, is available for download on iTunes here.

2. The New Instagram Update

I’m not even kidding, guys. I love this a lot. If not the DM groups, then the full sized photos. I’m not a crazy instagrammer, but I love the app as much as the next social media obsessed person. If you’ve been living under a rock, or if the data struggle has been real, this article will tell you what you need to know. Yay Instagram!

3. This Vine:

‘nuf said.

4. WILD by Troye Sivan

Everybody knows how  I get about Troye. Troye Boy. My small son. Troye Sivan released his fourth EP this month, and people are LOVING it. WILD is six tracks, featuring Broods and Tkay Maidza on EASE and DKLA respectively. The Blue Neighbourhood music videos (I’ve included the first one here) are a trilogy that showcases Troye’s inspiring use of his platforms to make a statement about the plight of gay teenagers (and young people in general).

Every offering on this EP is gold, and I’m eternally overjoyed to own it. WILD is available on iTunes here.

5. Mary @ MaryPlethora

Screenshot (217)

Mary is one of my favourite bloggers. This September, she moved away from home to attend university in the UK, and it’s been amazing to have been able to follow her journey into student life. She’s also so kind, and so, so beautiful! Happy birthday for the 12th, Mary, and I wish you all the best for this year! I can’t wait for this lovely, lovely girl to show uni who’s boss. Check her out here at maryplethora.wordpress.com.

Thank you for sitting through  five of my faves for September – perhaps this’ll become a usual feature? We’ll see, I suppose! In any case, to you and yours:

Scoot on ~ that emotion thing

faces

The weight

of a simple human emotion

weighs me down.

~Troye Sivan

Apart from providing you with some beautiful lyrics,I have another task today. It’s day 4 of my 100 happy days, and I’m feeling happy as can be – not really, but I feel alright – but I have something that I really need to get out.

No, it’s not a fart.

Okay, so I’ve been on this planet for almost 16 years and I’ve been impressed by it every day.I know sometimes people say that they’re so sick of the planet and they’d much rather go some place else, but there really isn’t any other place to go as of now. If you’re that person, sit tight and appreciate where you are or try to move planets and suffer the consequences (i.e. death with a side of death).

The basis of the existence of some people, and recently myself, is a war with one’s self. I think the fact that we are human plays a big role in this. I always marvel at the humans’ ability to keep going. They always manage to stagger on – even with tears streaming down their faces.

This ability, I think, lies within emotion. Today I felt things that I would never have thought I would this time last year. I felt pain, but not physical or the usual emotional pain, but pain that comes from being so numb, it hurts. Well, that sounded dramatic! This human emotion thing is really a lot to deal with though.

The thing about these emotions for me is that I’m crazy about them. I’m crazy about hurt, and love, and pain. Not crazy about feeling them, they just fascinate me. I like the idea of different forms of the same emotions, and the way every single person can feel it regardless of who they are or what they’ve been through.

But that’s the thing about the love. It’s not about a boy or a girl or a cat for me, it’s just the love. I’m an addict, and I need my fix. But everyone is out. There is no love for me. None of the love to spare.

I feel that way sometimes. I don’t feel like nobody loves me (I think ermigaaard) or that I have nobody to love, it just feels like it’s run out everywhere. And all the love stores are on a very extended lunch break or are closed until further notice.

So, yes, I feel a little weighed down.

Until happier days, hopefully

Scoot on ~ the problem with youtube(rs)

I did a bad thing today. Today, I stood in front of a staircase with an apple in my hand for exactly 42 minutes. I was eating said apple, but I refused to go downstairs. Why? I DON’T KNOW! I have perfected the art of nothingness and it’s getting scary! I don’t think you understand, but for a person to stand in front of a staircase without any reason for almost three-quarters of an hour, there is a problem.

Regardless of any of my nothingness-ness-ness, today I want to tell you about one of my favourite things in the world:

YouTube.

Okay, so this is from tumblr, but still, ti’s a party 😀

YouTube is basically the best thing ever. And YouTubers are literally the best things ever. Wait, is it offensive that I call them things? Meh ^^, Anywho, I just wanted to let you people in on some of the reasons why I am a failure at life and why everyone thinks I have a good friend named Melissa who provides me with much body heat (naughty 😉 ) when she’s actually my laptop.

So, if you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, welcome to le internet! Alternitavley called le interwebs, le place of procrastination, le best friend, le home, le…le.. well if you’re reading this then I suppose you know of the internet due to your current connection…if not, three claps for you you legend! *claps thrice*

YouTube is awesome. Now, there are some people on this YouTube thing who sometimes talk into a camera. We call these people YouTubers.

Yes Doge, they are so many beautiful. Amongst some of my favourite camera-talking-folk who have ZERO idea that I exist are the following:

  1. Troye Sivan. Actually born Troye Mellet (huge fangirl alert) and still fabulous since then. Pleease watch these videos until the end, if not for anything but that wink at the end! So much good.
  2. Dominic. Also known as D-trix from SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance). Watch the “the 20” videos. Do. So much laugh. Much funny. Go. Self defined as “Reality TV loser that loves dancing to Justin Bieber. Youtube is my life. It use to be myspace, but apparently I’m the only one that still checks it.” Goooo!
  3. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. No words. Very laughing. Watch watch watch

No you may be wondering what the problem is with these lovely people, but that is it. The problem is that they are so damn perfect and so much haha funny, tht I HAVE NO LIFE AND DO NOTHING. I guess it helps in a strange sort of way, seeing that my dearest YouTube will always be there for me. Feeling loved already. Much happy.

Small still voice in my head is telling me that the Doge-ing is too much. If you have no idea what I mean by doge-ing, click here.

I do apologise for the absolute crap quality of this post, dearest internet. I apologise profusely and wish only for your forgiveness.

All my love, all the time

-Scoot xx
