WE’RE ALL SLUTS HERE

Damn, Shalom! Back at it again with the posts about slut shaming!

(the first one is here.)

Celebrity news is not my niche. It’s not. I have very limited interest or time in and for it. I’m not big on hero worshiping people you think are your friends because they let you see into their lives by means of one of the biggest online platforms in the world. I don’t have any kind of allegiance to Zoe Sugg, or Kim Kardashian. At all.  I am, however, interested in slut shaming & double standards. And by interested, I mean fed the hell up.

Now, I’m not sure if you follow the happenings on the internet the way I do, but we’ve established that I spend 90% of my time on here. Recently, Zoe Sugg, aka Zoella (of YouTube and Girl Online (strong opinions about ghostwriting & lies surrounding said book) fame) posted this photo to her Snapchat (?):

Why #WeStandWithZoe was trending on Twitter last night

source: zoella / snapchat

The world’s Most Reliable and Truthful paper TM, the Sun, then did what any good and trustworthy paper would do: they published the selfie in their online newspaper with the Least Clickbaity Title Ever TM:

Capture.JPG

And so it began. The article called Zoe out for “trying to widen her fanbase”(?) and essentially gave her several virtual slaps on both of her wrists for being the sluttiest slut to ever slut. In her long sleeved shirt & Calvin Klein briefs. Yowza. Hide your kids, hide your wives – Zoe Sugg’s belly button and upper thigh are changing the world and hurting your family.

Did you catch the dripping sarcasm? I hope you caught the dripping sarcasm.

The Sun is a very stupid paper that makes me very tired. In my Media and Society lectures, we talk about the tabloid, and how ridiculous it is. Basically. We study the media effects as well, but we spend a good portion of time lamenting The Sun. Sydney @ Love, Sydney is a die hard Zoe supporter, and made this post with all of the right reasons to back Zoe in this stupid stupid time.

Zoe’s fans, friends, and other supporters had things like this to say, and #WeStandWithZoe was trending within a couple of hours:

a.JPG

From this all, we can deduce that the people who had made these comments are body positive people against slut shaming, and believe that “skin is just skin” and that Zoe shouldn’t be ashamed for loving her body, yes? Okay. Now, another picture:

kk.JPG

Shalom! Stop spamming us with this, this — this is unacceptable! How dare you give her any more attention! Kim Kardashian is teaching our children how to be — this! She is objectifying herself! She has only gotten anywhere in life because of her body! This woman is a slut! Her children will see this one day! What kind of a woman —

Okay. You be quiet.

To have such a double standard – does it make sense to you? To quote Zoe’s supporters, ” being confident and loving your body IS NEVER A BAD THING”. Sydney’s post reads,

We should be teaching the younger generations self-confidence, and to love there bodies and that we shouldn’t need to feel like we need to hide ourselves. We definitely should not be teaching them that it is okay to slut shame and tear people down when they do have to confidence to post a picture no matter what they are wearing.

Mmmmm. Okay. Are you picking up a discrepancy between what’s said by supporters and what Kim received? I mean, Zoe’s supporters are enraged because, “why is it so shameful to show skin?” Surely, Kim should have received the same support? The ethos is the same, isn’t it?

I’m pretty sure you’ve picked up my position on this matter. I don’t believe in slut shaming. I have no time for it. I have no time for selective defence. I am not here for shaming one woman who clearly loves her body, and supporting another who does the same.

Stop slut shaming, y’all. It’s 2016.  It’ll be 2017 before you know it, and I’m going to make another post like this. I can bet money on it.

Love and light,
shalom xo

YEAH, I KNOW. [Alternatively: Feb Faves & a Monthly Roundup]

So, my good friend Engie made a post about the things that were making her mad and stressing her out, and a lot of them revolved around college, being a blogger in college…you get where I’m going with this? I’ve been away for two odd weeks. I make these posts all the time (see…all my past posts for reference) but this time, I have actual things to say. Yay for planned rambles!

1. RE: UNIVERSITY.

This thing just does not let up. I’m a law student and I’m taking courses in philosophy, media studies and english as well. I had no idea just how far behind one could fall in three weeks. It’s safe to say that I’ve found out. Blogging has become la absolute SAFEHAVEN. I think I’m going to force myself to incorporate it into my failure of a schedule – like mandatory me-time? (I hate the phrase me-time. Ugh.)Some advice to all the hatchlings who will soon be embarking on the Great College Adventure TM: Come in armed. It’ll eat you alive if you don’t. Always have an umbrella, a charger, cash, and painkillers. Also a pen.

2. Favourites!

I haven’t done much in the way of the fun things, but I have, as usual, made my home in the Internet. Here are some things (most Internet, some not.) that I loved this month:

Alt-Indie Music Videos

Troye Sivan, Halsey and THE 1975 all released music videos for such AMAZING tunes off of their respective latest albums. Troye’s video for YOUTH blew me away for several reasons: (1) SO MUCH PURPLE PASTEL INDIE TUMBLR TEEN. (2) HAPPY FUNCTIONAL PARTY TEENAGERS. (actually, Troye is 20 (21 in June!) but he still counts. For reasons. Halsey’s video for Colors (the South African in me is mega cringing at that spelling) is just…let me tell you, (#nospoilers), it’s not what you expect. The music video for THE 1975’s The Sound is really the BEST THING I  SAW THE ENTIRE MONTH. It’s a massive ‘up yours’ to all of the critics who “only heard chocolate once and hated it”. Watch it. WATCH THEM ALL.

Blogger: Maxine Zhao

Alright, so I feel super honoured to say that Max once told me that I served as inspiration for her starting her blog. And man, do you need to see it. Maxine is what I’d call an up-and-coming fashion and lifestyle blogger with INSANE talent regarding taking timed tripod self shots. She’s also an absolute doll with a tiny little car named Kevin. Did you need any further justification? Check her out here.

Beauty

I’m not even going to pretend to know a lot about beauty. At all. Because I don’t. But I’ve been using mostly Nivea products as of late, just because they happen to work the best with my skin. For now. Stress breakouts are a real thing  and a good skincare regime is legitimately another university must have. Here are some of the things that I’ve been putting on my largest organ! (Skin. I’m talking about my skin.)

I have combination to oily skin, and this shine control face wash from Nivea is just YES. It’s super soothing on the skin, first and foremost, and it also works really well? It feels a lot like a continuous sea breeze while you’re washing your face. (10 points if you can think of a worse sounding line.) In the way of makeup, I don’t wear much because I can’t afford much (lol) but I DO love the LA Girl Perfecting Liquid Makeup foundation in Mahogany. I adore this foundation. It feels really light on the skin, and doesn’t wear off at all – I generally don’t need to reapply it during the day. I should really invest in a BB cream for the days that I don’t feel up to the industrial task of putting on a bit of paint. Hmm. Money.

Winning!

This month, writer and illustrator Dallas Clayton announced a competition on Instagram. He made six journals, and asked for cities from every continent to send them to. He’s still looking for some participants from Antarctica. Long story short, he chose Johannesburg! It’s all very exciting. I’m excited.

3. February.

February has been orange. It’s been the sheer intensity of my media studies course pack readings, the only pen I could find for two weeks, my flats that the 10 minute walk between buildings on campus ruined, and the 36 C days. I have learned how to hold my breath for as long as possible when being utterly submerged by the ocean that is “adulthood”. I’m not really an adult. Not even legally – I’m still 17. It does, however, seem that I am in the bracket where ‘act like an adult’ is applicable. I’m acting, alright.

For the first time this month, I was paid an allowance (!) which may not seem like much, but you need to realise that I’d never recieved an allowance before. Oh, Shalom, how did you go out to concerts and movies and the things you loved with your mostly make-believe friends through out high school? I didn’t. It was really cool – until I ran out of money. And had no way to get home from school because I couldn’t pay for public transport. Or food on campus. I’ve learned a lot since then. (Bye, morning cappuccinos.)

I’m really stressed out about what March will bring. March sees my FAFSA deadline (thank you uncooperative parent for STILL not having provided me with your tax information 🙂 ), my first official written tests, learning how to write an abstract & a research paper, more poetry analysis than I thought possible, and probably more tears than I am hydrated for. It’s surreal to think that we’re already almost in the third month of 2016, but I’m glad we’re all here.

This was lovely to write and compile and all the rest. Thank you all for sticking around! I think you are all very kind. I also think I want to make videos? Because I keep wanting to say things – in my actual voice, that people can hear – but then I remember that I’m typing. Hm. A thing to consider.

Love and light,
shalom

Merry Cringemas! | Blogmas Day 24!

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF BLOGMAS!

I spent yesterday watching Christmas movies and getting proper festive, and today I’ve said “merry Christmas” at least 30 times. My Love Actually count is currently at 3. Hot chocolate and The Polar Express has happened. There has been the slightest bit of a massive family crisis, but it was (is) mostly massive.

On the topic of Christmas movies, have you seen this video? Hazel Hayes, with the help of the FieldDay channel managed to recreate 12 iconic movie scenes in one take. WATCH IT.

The man in the fat suit comes tonight, and I have left no cookies for him. Simply because I ate them — definitely not because I don’t believe. I refuse to be called a doubter.

This year, I discovered a near-first-edition of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Despite the pdf form of it, it was a gorgeous read, and I thoroughly adored the illustrations. Thank you archive.org!

Screenshot (243).png

Screenshot (242)

I’m really keen to get under the tree this year. Not me – I’m not a present, but the presents are, well, present, and I’m excited to see what’s in the shoebox that doesn’t have shoes.

In my family, we open presents on Christmas morning. In that of my gorgeous friend, Christmas Eve is Christmas – her grandmother used to be an army nurse and didn’t get Christmas off to spend with the family. Christmas is all around, and you know what else is? LOVE ACTUALLY IS ALL AROUND.

I couldn’t resist. I’m going to watch Love Actually again.

Merry Christmas (eve?) everyone! I’m quite proud of myself for mostly making it through blogmas. If you’re feeling particularly reminiscent, you can find the entire season’s posts right here. I never thought I’d do nearly as well as I did! I’ve found some extraordinary blogs and bloggers because of my Christmas craziness, and I’m so thankful for them – and excited to read more of their stuff! To everyone who I’ve met along the way – Merry Christmas!

May your Christmas Day and 2016 be merry and bright! To all of my lovely readers – I treasure you all endlessly. I hope to reach new heights with you all next year – thank you for sticking around.

Happy Christmas!

Love and light,
shalom xo

ps: somebody just started up their fireworks and it is 9:07 pm on christmas eve – can you say READY

Not Today | Blogmas Day 5

Today has not been a very lovely day. Unforch. Eugh.

In brief, I had to say goodbye to my person for six-ish weeks, had a run in with a parental human of mine, had a good two hour cry that left me feeling really dehydrated, and walked around a shopping centre until my feet blistered. Very gross all in all.

I’m not feeling particularly festive today at all. I haven’t even looked at the tree once. But the Vlogmas videos are getting me through it…I think? Here are some of my faves that I haven’t previously mentioned (I think?).

Yeah, I know. “Shalom, aren’t these all Louise’s videos?” YES THEY ARE. DEAL WITH IT.

Today has actually just been really shit for me, and my capacity for shitty days is very very close to zero. Half of the tub of ice-cream may have perished. Don’t judge me. Actually, do judge. I’M SEVENTEEN AND FINISHED WITH MY ENTIRE SCHOOL CAREER I AM OFF THE GRID

Have a lovely eveningdaywhatever, my friends. I’m too exhausted to make this any better. I’m so sorry. Except, I’m not sorry for myself – I’ve chosen to stop apologising for myself. This is getting ridiculous.

Love and light,
shalom

Banner Manor | Blogmas Day 3

I was quite pleased with myself today! I managed to get up before 1 PM (which doesn’t sound like a feat, but I’m on school holidays, give me a break!) I cleaned my room, and watched SO MANY Vlogmas videos that my family is probably going to roast me on the spit for using so much of the bandwith.

Today we decided to try to be as crafty as we were yesterday. Initially, we succeeded! We strung the banner from yesterday’s crafting experience, and despite the lounge wall still looking quite very empty, I’m happy with how it turned out:

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After this and well placed misplacement of an old tree-topper, we took a leaf out of Sydney’s Christmas Decor post – or at least we tried to. The snowflake project didn’t quite turn out, but the mess of paper that I’m left to clean sure did.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Tomorrow, I’ll be headed into tinsel town! Not really, but I will be going to dinner with a couple of my loves, and I’m almost 100% certain that the mall will have outdone itself for Christmas. Stay tuned!

Love and light,
Shalom

Blogmas, Vlogmas & December In Between | Update

Aloha! I have updates and news that are 70% irrelevant to mast things concerning most people. Little things that are happening (for real this time) but before I start, I should inform you: I’m in South Africa. Snow at Christmastime is NOT a thing. Okay. Now, it begins!

  1. Blogmas & Vlogmas

Starting on December 1st, I’m going to be doing a blog-a-day until Christmas and sometimes, a little vlog too over here on my YouTube channel – you can subscribe to get first dibs! I think I low-key know that I’m only committing to Vlogmas so I have a reason to get up and shower every day. Or something. Stay tuned for my lonely December misadventures while all my friends are (a) overseas, (b) partying it up by the sea, or (c) both. Everyone is welcome to join! I think I’ll be using WeBlogWeVlog‘s Vlogmas calendar from last year – just scroll back to December 2014. Here it is too, for your added convenience:

2. Ta, High School

I got through exams! Somehow I managed, and I don’t know how I’m going to stay sane until results day in January. In any case, a school uniform will never mandatorily adorn my body again. Bless.

3. The Series Quest

I’ve got a lot to do in terms of time wasting. For example, I’d love to watch Jessica Jones BUT I’m lucky enough to live South of the equator where Netflix doesn’t exist. Except maybe in Australia? I’m not sure. In any case, I need new series to watch, old series to finish (I see you, Game of Thrones) and something, anything, to obsess over.

That’s pretty much what December looks like for me – I hope you stick around! What does your December look like?

(That was the cheesiest, most cliche blogger ending I have ever typed out. Yeesh.)

Love and light,
Shalom

September Favourites

Greetings! It has indeed been too long of a while. Things have changed around here – well, one thing has changed here – my theme! I was going for the modern-but-also-annoyed-but-also-really-happy-with-this look. Did I succeed? Let me know!

Now, I’ve never done a favourites post, but I was trailing through the danger that is my internet history, and I found some things that I think people would be better off knowing about. Yes. Dangling preposition. I see it. I’m ignoring it.

1. Cœur de Pirate

Cœur de Pirate (literally meaning Pirate’s Heart) is Béatrice Martin and her French indie-pop  melodies. Check her out if you’re a fan of  Local Natives , The Head and The Heart, and Of Monsters and Men. The chances are that you’ll love Cœur de Pirate regardless. Her latest single, Carry On, is available in both French and English, and the newest album, Roses, is available for download on iTunes here.

2. The New Instagram Update

I’m not even kidding, guys. I love this a lot. If not the DM groups, then the full sized photos. I’m not a crazy instagrammer, but I love the app as much as the next social media obsessed person. If you’ve been living under a rock, or if the data struggle has been real, this article will tell you what you need to know. Yay Instagram!

3. This Vine:

‘nuf said.

4. WILD by Troye Sivan

Everybody knows how  I get about Troye. Troye Boy. My small son. Troye Sivan released his fourth EP this month, and people are LOVING it. WILD is six tracks, featuring Broods and Tkay Maidza on EASE and DKLA respectively. The Blue Neighbourhood music videos (I’ve included the first one here) are a trilogy that showcases Troye’s inspiring use of his platforms to make a statement about the plight of gay teenagers (and young people in general).

Every offering on this EP is gold, and I’m eternally overjoyed to own it. WILD is available on iTunes here.

5. Mary @ MaryPlethora

Screenshot (217)

Mary is one of my favourite bloggers. This September, she moved away from home to attend university in the UK, and it’s been amazing to have been able to follow her journey into student life. She’s also so kind, and so, so beautiful! Happy birthday for the 12th, Mary, and I wish you all the best for this year! I can’t wait for this lovely, lovely girl to show uni who’s boss. Check her out here at maryplethora.wordpress.com.

Thank you for sitting through  five of my faves for September – perhaps this’ll become a usual feature? We’ll see, I suppose! In any case, to you and yours:

love & light

Scoot on ~ reunions

There’s something about seeing people that you haven’t seen in a long time.

I generally get attacked by nostalgia when I’m least expecting it, and it gets me subtweeting and drinking copious amounts of tea and eating all of the noodles in my house. I’m not extremely fond of it, but I don’t entirely regret or hate it. Simply because reliving memories can be wonderful. It can be so lovely to remember the things that once made you smile, laugh, cry and almost run naked in the street – the usual.

Anyway, today I met with my class from my old school. I’d been in that class since 2012 until June this year when I moved schools, and not much has changed. Except the dynamics. Today there was so much love, and food and chocolate milkshakes and joking. I met up with people who had survived exams, just like me (kind of, I’ve still got two to go). I took bad selfies with good looking boys (because they’re the only kind I can pull off) and I got a Christmas present from two lovely girls-one who I’ve become extremely close to this year through failed maths tests and direct messages on instagram.

I’m so glad that I went. I took matching selfies with a girl who I kind of lost touch with – remember Jess? We kind of call ourselves “lovers rekindling an old flame”. Let it be. I also took selfies with her boyfriend who was really polite this time (thank you Seth 🙂 ) and they were quite funny.

I told jokes and we all laughed, and I had a grand time. And I thought for a moment, that maybe 2014 hasn’t been so bad. Dwelling on those thoughts made me think of the bad, though, so I stopped. I think that we’ve all come a long way, from counting down to 2014 with then-boyfriends and making promises to ourselves that the universe just didn’t let us keep. Some dangerous nights and lovely days later, we find ourselves here: five Fridays from 2015.

Here are some things that made me happy about this reunion – the first, and hopefully not last I’ve been to.

This is me and Jess. She's very beautiful and intelligent and great.

YouTube and Lashes (Not the eye ones)

Am I a bad blogger? YES I AM A BAD BLOGGER.

This reminds me of a time when my English teacher (phenomenal woman) begged for forgiveness and then got on her knees and gave herself twenty make-believe lashes for accidentally cancelling appointments with some students.

I won’t be giving anyone any lashes.

On the real, I really am sorry for not posting at all! November comes at the worst time: NaBloPoMo, The Most Important School Exams I’ve Ever Written, Troye Sivan and Caspar Lee Coming To SA But I Can’t See Them Because I’m Writing Chemistry…the list goes on. I’ve been ridiculously busy and haven’t been able to get much done because I’ve been studying…but I haven’t gotten much studying done either?

In a word: bruh.

In any case, my YouTube channel is under construction! I’m officially starting on December 1st and I’m feeling all the feels, people. I feel a little weird, but mostly full of anticipation: there shall soon be a YouTube account that people will see me be awkward on and laugh and IT’S SUPER GREAT.

I+know+that+feel+bro+_f8bc5de9674fd54f1dc1cad678f774da

I’m super excited because this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and even though it’s going to be more work on my part, I feel like it’ll help me get more organised? Yeah, mapping out schedules that’ll go out of the window in a week – that’s my area of expertise, yo.

I’m going to be posting more regularly now that I only have FOUR EXAMINATIONS REMAINING (YASSSSSSSS) as well as a schedule in the pipelines- I’m really proud of this schedule, and if it would come to life and stop being a ninja turtle, it’d be great.

I’ve spent the better part of my day choosing channel art and convincing myself that I didn’t do too badly on my Drama Theory exam. Thank you to everyone on Facebook and Instagram and Twitter who have put up with my 12 “Should I really do this?” posts. I really appreciate every single bit of motivation that I get.

Love, excitement, and everlasting internet,

Shalom X

Scoot on ~ the problem with youtube(rs)

I did a bad thing today. Today, I stood in front of a staircase with an apple in my hand for exactly 42 minutes. I was eating said apple, but I refused to go downstairs. Why? I DON’T KNOW! I have perfected the art of nothingness and it’s getting scary! I don’t think you understand, but for a person to stand in front of a staircase without any reason for almost three-quarters of an hour, there is a problem.

Regardless of any of my nothingness-ness-ness, today I want to tell you about one of my favourite things in the world:

YouTube.

Okay, so this is from tumblr, but still, ti’s a party 😀

YouTube is basically the best thing ever. And YouTubers are literally the best things ever. Wait, is it offensive that I call them things? Meh ^^, Anywho, I just wanted to let you people in on some of the reasons why I am a failure at life and why everyone thinks I have a good friend named Melissa who provides me with much body heat (naughty 😉 ) when she’s actually my laptop.

So, if you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, welcome to le internet! Alternitavley called le interwebs, le place of procrastination, le best friend, le home, le…le.. well if you’re reading this then I suppose you know of the internet due to your current connection…if not, three claps for you you legend! *claps thrice*

YouTube is awesome. Now, there are some people on this YouTube thing who sometimes talk into a camera. We call these people YouTubers.

Yes Doge, they are so many beautiful. Amongst some of my favourite camera-talking-folk who have ZERO idea that I exist are the following:

  1. Troye Sivan. Actually born Troye Mellet (huge fangirl alert) and still fabulous since then. Pleease watch these videos until the end, if not for anything but that wink at the end! So much good.
  2. Dominic. Also known as D-trix from SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance). Watch the “the 20” videos. Do. So much laugh. Much funny. Go. Self defined as “Reality TV loser that loves dancing to Justin Bieber. Youtube is my life. It use to be myspace, but apparently I’m the only one that still checks it.” Goooo!
  3. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. No words. Very laughing. Watch watch watch

No you may be wondering what the problem is with these lovely people, but that is it. The problem is that they are so damn perfect and so much haha funny, tht I HAVE NO LIFE AND DO NOTHING. I guess it helps in a strange sort of way, seeing that my dearest YouTube will always be there for me. Feeling loved already. Much happy.

Small still voice in my head is telling me that the Doge-ing is too much. If you have no idea what I mean by doge-ing, click here.

I do apologise for the absolute crap quality of this post, dearest internet. I apologise profusely and wish only for your forgiveness.

All my love, all the time

-Scoot xx
